Homemade Laundry Soap
Ingredients:
- 5 oz. NOT-moisturizing soap (Pink Zote - one third of 14 oz. bar, Fels-Naptha - one 5 oz. bar)- 4 oz. (1/2 cup) borax
- 8 oz. (1 cup) washing soda (NOT baking soda!)
- 5-gallon metal bucket with a lid
- big bottles and cans with screw caps (with total 10-gallon capacity)
You can use any soap as long as it is not a moisturizing one. The moisturizing soaps have extra oils in them, which can leave a residue.
Preparation:
Grate bar of soap into powder and add to saucepan with 4 cups of water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.Fill a 5-gallon bucket half full of hot tap water.
Add melted soap, washing soda and borax.
Stir well until all the powder is dissolved.
Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.
After it has thickened overnight it is very thick and gel-like, use a big spoon to stir it. Use a measuring cup and funnel to put equal parts of soap and hot water into the old detergent bottle and shake it up. So, finally, this recipe makes 10 gallons of liquid soap.
Usage:
- for top load washing machines - 5/8 cup per load (about 200 loads)- for front load washing machines - 1/4 cup per load (about 500 loads)
